Third Clinical Year

PGY 3 general surgery residents at Indiana University rotate at all five downtown facilities - University Hospital, Methodist Hospital, Roudebush VA, and Eskenazi Hospital.  They also rotate at our IU West facility located in Avon (west side of Indianapolis).  The PGY 3 year sees the resident gaining greater decision making responsibility through consultation opportunities as the senior most resident on the Transplant, SICU, and Breast Surgery at University Hospital, and IU West rotations.  They also see greater decision making responsibilities as they are the mid-level resident provider on the Eskenazi Trauma Service with a PGY 4 resident as their chief.  PGY 3 residents are also allowed an elective month for future career exploration.

PGY 3 house staff should expect to see increases in both clinical and operative autonomy throughout the year.  A major goal of the PGY 3 year is to see appropriate increases in these areas so that they are ready to take on the appropriate chief level rotations assigned during the PGY 4 year.

All PGY 3 trainees, gain corresponding exposure and experience during their third year in general, vascular, thoracic, plastic/burns, SICU, transplant, and trauma surgery.  PGY 3 residents on average take alternating weekend call at Methodist, Eskenazi, VA, and University.  All PGY 3 residents participate in a month long block of night float.  Rotations away from the downtown campus will be incorporated into either the Eskenazi or Methodist call pool, determined by the administrative chief residents.  Rotations for all PGY 3 residents are currently one-month long.
