General Surgery Fellowships
The Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery Fellowship at Indiana University was initiated in 2005, accredited in 2006 and reaccredited in 2009. This one-year clinical program provides the most robust HPB operative experience available in North America. Preoperative, operative and postoperative care are all stressed for a broad range of patients with benign and malignant HPB disorders. Minimally invasive and robotic techniques are taught, and multidisciplinary patient management is a key principle of the Indiana University approach. For HPB Surgery Fellows who desire further training in ERCP, liver transplantation, clinical or basic science research, a second year of training can be arranged. The aim of the Indiana University Advanced Laparoscopy Fellowship is to produce leaders in the field of modern surgery. The program, based out of IU Health North Medical Center, exposes fellows to a rich blend of bariatric and advanced minimally invasive surgery through four monthly rotations. Fellowship duties include three or four operating days and one clinical day a week. Fellows are involved in all stages of the management of the surgical and bariatric patient, including preoperative evaluation, postoperative management and follow up of patients. For those interested, there will be ample opportunities to learn the requisites for developing and maintaining a busy, comprehensive bariatric program. Participation in educational and academic pursuits will be strongly supported with adequate limitations on clinical duties to foster these activities. In addition to diagnostic and interventional endoscopy, fellows are mentored in the following laparoscopic procedures: antireflux fundoplications, paraesophageal hernia repair, Heller myotomy, inguinal hernia repair, ventral hernia repair, colon resections, adrenalectomy, splenectomy, gastric bypass, adjustable gastric band, and sleeve gastrectomy. Cutting edge techniques including single incision surgery and endoluminal procedures foster various research initiatives. Fellows participate in an organ-centered didactic schedule with regular journal clubs.
