Dr. Ladd is a tenured faculty member in the Indiana University School of Medicine.  Alan completed his undergraduate degree in biochemistry at Indiana University, Bloomington campus in 1990.  He earned his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis and trained in General Surgery, again at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis.  Subspecialty training in pediatric surgery was performed at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.  Since completion of training in 2002, Alan was been on staff as an attending surgeon at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis and at all other metropolitan hospitals with children’s services in Indianapolis.

Alan has strong academic interests in undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate medical education.  At the IU School of Medicine, he serves as the Statewide Clerkship Director for General Surgery, Director of Surgical electives for the Department of General Surgery, Chair of the Curriculum Council Steering Committee, a faculty advisor for the Surgery Student Interest Group, and faculty advisor for vertical mentoring within the IUSM.  He is also a clinical instructor for several IUSM elective courses, including director of the highly regarded Preparation for Surgical Internship course, which utilizes virtual and animate simulators for the education of students pursuing a general surgery residency.  He is a member of the School’s Elective Subcommittee, member of the Basic Clinical Skills Competency Team, and a member of the curricular integration team for educational redesign.

As an instructor for General Surgery Residency and Pediatric Surgery Post-graduate Residency, Alan performs bedside clinical teaching at Riley and Peyton Manning Children’s hospitals and teaches procedural techniques in the Department of Surgery’s Center for Teaching and Learning through simulation and animal model laboratories.
