Gerardo A. Gomez, MD

Professor of Surgery
Director Trauma Surgery and Critical Care

Specialty: General Surgery
Residency: University of Massachusetts

I joined the Indiana University School of Medicine faculty in 1990 when I was recruited by Jay Grosfeld, MD Chairman of the Department of Surgery. I was offered and I accepted the position of Director of the Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care and Emergency Surgical Services at the Associate Professor level with tenure. While my work was based at Wishard Hospital running the trauma program, I was also participating in the coverage of general surgery both at Wishard and University Hospitals.

My declared area of excellence is in service not only to my discipline but to the community I serve. I have an extremely busy clinical and administrative schedule which includes in-house trauma and emergency general surgery calls, directly managing patient care activities in the operating room, in- patient rounds and outpatient clinic for both trauma and general surgery patients. At the same time I do have great interest and enjoy teaching and training medical students, residents, nurses and paramedics.

Clinical Research Interests: Trauma systems, trauma care; blood substitutes
