Thomas Birdas, MD joined the faculty at the Indiana University school of medicine in October 2008 as an assistant professor of surgery. Dr. Birdas is a native of Greece, where he completed his medical education at the University of Athens. He completed his general surgical and cardiothoracic training at the West Penn Allegheny Health System in Pittsburgh, PA. Prior to joining Indiana University he was the associate director of the West Penn Lung center in Pittsburgh. Dr. Birdas specializes in general thoracic surgery and, in particular, minimally invasive thoracic surgery, such as VATS lobectomy and minimally invasive esophagectomy. He has served as principle or co-investigator in many research projects and has authored several peer-reviewed publications. Dr Birdas is also the Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the Indianapolis VA Medical Center.
