Associate Professor of Surgery

Specialty: Cardiac Surgery

Medical School: Indiana University School of Medicine

Residency: Washington University School of Medicine

Fellowship: Stanford University; University of California, San Francisco

Dr. Rodefeld’s research effort is focused on single ventricle heart disease. This is the leading cause of death in the first year of life from any birth defect. Currently, repair is performed in a series of 3 high-risk staged procedures. Repair culminates in a Fontan circulation”, which is identical to a normal circulation with the exception that it lacks a right-sided circulatory power source. These children live the remainder of their lives with inherent circulatory inefficiency. Late after repair, Fontan patients develop chronic issues which include activity intolerance, swelling, and liver and intestinal problems. All are expected to eventually fail. Currently, there is no targeted medical or surgical therapy to prevent the progression to Fontan failure.

Dr. Rodefeld’s effort is focused on adding a dedicated blood pump to the Fontan circulation. This will restore normal biventricular circulatory physiology. A blood pump which is ideal to perform in this role does not currently exist, but innovations occurring in Dr. Rodefeld’s lab are changing this. The solution of adding a power source, termed “cavopulmonary assist”, was first described by this group in 2003. The work is funded by a National Institutes of Health R01 Bioengineering Research Grant. If successful, the technology has potential to reduce the number of surgical procedures required, and will address late Fontan failure by converting patients with univentricular circulations to normal biventricular physiology, as a “biventricular Fontan circulation”.

Dr. Rodefeld is an Indiana native. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and French at Indiana University, and graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1990. He performed residency training in general and cardiothoracic surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. During this time, he performed research on arrhythmia prevention in Fontan circulations as a Fellow of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. The findings of this work have been adopted into current surgical practice. He subsequently served as a Fellow in congenital cardiac surgery at University of California, San Francisco and Stanford University Schools of Medicine. Since 2001, Dr. Rodefeld has been on faculty at Indiana University School of Medicine where he combines a congenital cardiac surgical practice with a cutting-edge research effort to improve the health of children with single ventricle heart disease. Dr. Rodefeld collaborates extensively with Purdue University faculty in Mechanical Engineering and University of Louisville faculty in Bioengineering.

Basic Research Interests: Single ventricle physiology; Fontan circulation

Dr. Rodefeld's research effort is aimed at solving ongoing challenges related to single ventricle heart disease. This includes large animal studies related to mechanisms of physiologic adaptation to univentricular Fontan circulation and novel mechanical circulatory support strategies to improve hemodynamic status in single ventricle (Fontan) physiology.
