The Section of Transplant Surgery and the Clarian Transplant Institute are dedicated to excellence in organ transplantation, research, and education. Our goals are to see no one die while waiting for an organ, and to return patients to a self-sufficient and active life.

Clarian Transplant is the largest, most comprehensive center of its kind in the region and the 5th largest by volume in the United States. Our Abdominal Transplant Program is the third largest in the country and offers short wait times. We are proud of this distinction, knowing it translates into more lives being saved. The Section's research program is focused on xenotransplantation as a solution to the organ donor shortage. The James Ackerman Xenotransplantion Laboratory is directed by Bashir Mir, PhD, and the Xenoimmunology Laboratory is directed by Christopher Burlak, PhD. We also have an extensive clinical database for liver, kidney, pancreas and intestinal transplant analysis that is maintained by Richard S. Mangus, MD, MS. Charitable support is vital for continuing this important research.

Our abdominal transplantation fellowship is accredited by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. Two applicants are accepted every other year, and each applicant must have completed a general surgery residency. Fellows learn general principles of immunosuppression and the preoperative, operative and post operative management of kidney, pancreas, liver and intestinal transplant patients. We are one of a small handful of programs that has the necessary volume to train fellows in all organ systems.
