Conferences
Our conference schedule is designed to meet all requirements of the Residency Review Committee for Plastic Surgery. Currently, for 2009-2010 we are on a two-year Core Curriculum. In keeping with the RRC directives, the class of 2011 will be our inaugural class in our three year curriculum. The Wednesday conference format was designed to accommodate expansion to the three-year curriculum.
Weekly Conferences
Monday 7:00 - 8:00 a.m. - Indications
This conference is related to the prior week's Wednesday Didactic conference and incorporates a review of the pertinent Core Quest and In-Service Exam questions and relevant case presentations by a faculty member in an oral board format.
Wednesday 7:00 - 9:00 a.m. - Didactic
This conference provides the foundation of core knowledge for the residency. It is currently based off a progressive two-year topic cycle for the first and second year residents. As we transition to a three-year curriculum, the conference schedule will be expanded to provide the additional depth and complexity of new technology and treatments within plastic surgery.
The schedule is organized such that there is a core orientation at the beginning of each academic year. The following 10 months are organized such that each individual level of trainee presents a given set of topics such that there is no repetition at the resident level as they progress but critical information is repeated for review and exposure to maximize retention.
Didactic Burn Rounds-Adult and Pediatric
The multidisciplinary care teams at both Riley Children's Hospital and Wishard Burn unit make weekly educational care rounds.
Monthly Conferences
Morbidity and Mortality
The division conducts monthly traditional Morbidity and Mortality conference reviewing critical cases. We also incorporate cases of high educational interest and uniqueness.
Journal Club
The division holds a monthly journal club incorporating the interesting and key additions to the professions literature from the core journals. This rotates between the faculty.
Bimonthly (every two months)
Facial Trauma Conference (alternates between ENT, OMFS, and Plastic Surgery)
This rotates among the core services providing facial trauma care. Topics are selected by each of the services to highlight current challenges, changes in care or opportunities to improve the outcomes of patients.
Special Lectures
Annual Trusler Lecture
This lecture focuses on Cleft Lip, Palate and Craniofacial Surgery. Guest lecturers are selected by the Director of the Craniofacial Program.
We also strive to incorporate two to three additional national visiting professors per year.
