Application Deadline - December 1 (Annually)

Apply by contacting the NRMP's Electronic Residency Application Service. Applications are accepted from September 1 to December 1 of each academic year.

In order to be considered for an interview, your file must contain the following items:

  1. Application information
  2. USLME Part I / II if available
  3. Transcript & Dean's letter
  4. Three letters of recommendation
  5. Chairman's letter
  6. J-1 Visas only
  7. No previous clinical experience
  8. Recent medical school graduate

Application Requirements for Foreign Medical Graduates

Indiana University Department of Surgery criteria concerning application for foreign medical graduates to the residency program:

  1. ECFMG certification
  2. Completion of the USMLE Parts 1 & 2
  3. J-1 visas only
  4. Graduation from medical school within the last two years
  5. No previous U.S. clinical experience
  6. Participation through ERAS program only; no paper applications
  7. Prefer USMLE scores 220 or higher
  8. Deadline for application to program: December 1 of current academic year
  9. Preliminary residency applications are interviewed on a selected interview day.

No paper applications will be accepted.

All applicants must apply through ERAS in order to be granted an interview.

Resident applicant interviews are held in the Department of Surgery offices located in Emerson Hall 202, 545 Barnhill Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46202, with the following schedule:

6:30 - 7:00 AM
Check-in

7:00 - 8:00 AM
Overview of the residency program with Drs. Lillemoe, Canal, and Torbeck

8:00 - 12:00 noon
Interviews with Faculty / Tour with Residents

12:00 noon
Lunch in the Bistro at University Place Conference Center with Residents


There is a "Social with the Residents" the evening before each interview from 7:00 - 9:00 PM with hors d'oeuvres and refreshments. Location will be announced.
