From the Chairman

I am very pleased that you are interested in the Indiana University Residency Training Program in Surgery. Our department has a long and rich tradition. It is a great honor for me to lead this program which in my opinion excels in all of the major missions of an academic surgical department: clinical service, research and education.

The current concept of surgical training began over a hundred years ago at the Johns Hopkins Hospital by Dr. William Halsted. The ideas of Dr. Halsted have served this country well, providing generations of well-trained surgeons. Yet as times have changed, so has residency training. I believe that the Department of Surgery at Indiana University is well positioned to allow us to be leaders in the change process and feel confident that we are training and educating tomorrow's best trained surgeons with the option of choosing careers in general surgery or pursuing fellowship training.

What excites me the most about this program is our rich clinical material based at our five major teaching hospitals: Indiana University Hospital, Riley Children's Hospital, the Roudebush VA Hospital, the Wishard Memorial Hospital of Marion County and the Methodist Hospital. In addition to the traditional surgical services at these sites, we have exciting preceptor models of education at our new suburban hospitals of Clarian North and Clarian West. Our program offers a rich clinical experience in all of the major components of surgery with a very diverse faculty of both generalists and specialists contributing to the broad based clinical experience. Products of our program have successfully matched with some of the most prestigious fellowships in all specialties throughout the United States. In addition to the outstanding clinical experience, the department offers the option of one or more years of surgical research. Residents from our program have been extraordinarily successful in their research endeavors and have presented frequently at national meetings and have outstanding publication records.

The goal of this department is to train the leaders of American surgery for the future. We do this through providing solid broad-based clinical training and the opportunity to participate in basic science and clinical research. To accomplish this we are committed to attracting the brightest and the best applicants to be part of the very exciting future of this department.
